WHAT IS AN E-BOOK READER?

An e-book reader is to books as an MP3 player is to a personal stereo. Rather than carrying around or storing lots of physical books you can store them electronically on an E-Book Reader. It is also possible to download new e-books from the Internet which are generally cheaper than traditional books.

ARE THEY EASY TO READ?

The latest versions of e-readers use something called e-ink which allow users to read the screen without a backlight like those used on laptops or handhelds game consoles such as the Nintendo DS ©. This makes e-readers as easy to view as a traditional book.

DO THEY NEED RECHARGING FREQUENTLY?

No, the way that e-book reader battery life is by page turns, the average e-book reader gives 7000 pages before it requires recharging. So you can read War and Peace a few times before you would need to plug your e-book reader in to recharge.

CAN I READ E-BOOKS ON MY COMPUTER OR PDA THOUGH?

Yes, e-books can be read on many other devices such as laptops. However, because e-book readers use the e-ink technology above they don’t give users the eye strain that is associated with viewing a computer monitor
In addition, the e-book readers are portable so you can read them in bed, on holiday or the bath! Try taking your laptop into the bath and see how you get on!

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD E-BOOKS?

There are hundreds of site on the Internet where you can download e-books such as eBooks.com

LG releases details of solar powered e-book reader

The long term future of e-book readers is set to be defined this week with electronic giants LG showcasing their prototype e-book reader. What sets this device apart from other e-book readers on the market is that it comes with it’s own power source – A slim solar energy panel.

E-book readers offer a tremendous set of benefits over traditional books – they’re lighter, portable, and a viable alternative to carrying around a suitcase full of pulp fiction on your next trip. The rise in popularity of e-book readers is also due to their environmental credentials when compared with the traditional publishing industry. Books that are released online are far more environmentally friendly then traditional books with their cost of energy, materials and air travel miles required for a single publication.

LG’s new solar powered e-book reader concept is simple as the device will be charged whilst you are reading in sunlight. The initial estimates are that 4-5 hours of charge from a light source will provide a full days reading.

A working prototype of the solar ebook will be on display at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) this week in Seoul.

Can Students make use of the latest e-book readers?

E-book readers are revolutionising the way that we read books, it is now possible to store thousands of e-books on a single e-book reader which is the size of a normal book but has an electronic screen.

But can the e-book reader offer any advantages to students who use text books as an integral part of their studies?

There are two main advantages for students using e-book readers:

1. Cost: E-books can often be bought online at a lower cost than traditional study books. For cash-strapped students saving a few pounds on each e-book bought can add up to a big saving at the end of term.

2. Portability: We have all seen students struggling to carry heavy textbooks to classes, imagine how much easier it would be to have all the textbooks stored electronically on an e-book reader. Furthermore, relevant text can be bookmarked and then referenced at a later stage.

So it would seem that e-book readers can become a valuable tool for all students as traditional study books and aids become available in electronic format. Furthermore, could we see lecturers issuing worksheets and study notes in an e-format to students to accompany their traditional text books?

Soldiers take e-book readers to war!

It would seem that the e-book reader is becoming the must-have gadget for our soldiers abroad. The reason for this is that most soldiers only have limited space for personal items in their kit bags. However, the convenience and portability of the e-book reader means that is can be slipped into a kit bag whilst still carrying vital survival items.

E-book readers help soldiers to relieve the boredom of being away from home and many can store thousands of books in a gadget that is smaller than a sheet of A4 paper.

The soldier has been told by his company commander to get hold of an eBook reader instead of an iPod, as they don’t block hearing and are silent

“We’ve been told Afghanistan is a mixture of extreme excitement and then waiting around a lot,” said one soldier preparing to deploy with The Rifles early next year. “You can’t take a lot of books with you and there’s not much choice to buy from when out there”.

The eInk technology used in eBook readers – which only draws power when the screen is redrawn – means the devices won’t need charging as frequently as MP3 players.

The eBook readers also allow troops to store photos of their families on the device, albeit on a monochrome screen.

Or for the really long tours of duty, Tolstoy’s classic War and Peace is available as a free download from Project Gutenburg.

What does the long term future hold for e-book readers?

Considering the money that has been spent developing e-book readers and the release of blockbuster novels in e format, it is obvious that the e-book reader format is here to stay. However, what is the long term future for the e-book reader technology? How will the e-book reader be used in 5 years time?

One school of thought is that the e-book reader will be an integral part of the coffee culture that is part of many peoples everyday life. However, rather than struggle to read the latest paper whilst drinking your latte or finding a power point for your internet enabled laptop you will just be able to download the latest ebook or electronic newspaper to your e book reader.

The convenience of being able to read the latest novel or catch up on the latest news in an e-format whilst drinking coffee is an attractive prospect to many regular coffee shop goers. No longer will they need to carry heavy books, unwieldy newspapers or heavy laptops when they have a coffee. An e-book reader can be carried easily in a pocket or handbag without feeling that you need to be a bodybuilder!

Why not buy an e-book reader today from a secure competitive site online?
